1. A Brief History of Georg Jensen

Georg Jensen was born in 1866 in Radvaad, Denmark. A talented sculptor and silversmith, Jensen’s artistic abilities were recognised early on. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and subsequently honed his skills working with leading Danish artisans of the time.

In 1904, at the age of 38, Jensen took a significant step forward by establishing his own silverware company in Copenhagen. Inspired by the organic forms of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Danish design traditions, Jensen’s vision was to create objects that harmoniously blended art and functionality.

Design Philosophy

Georg Jensen’s creations were characterised by a unique design philosophy that focused on combining aesthetics with practicality. He believed that everyday objects could be elevated to works of art through meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Jensen’s designs often incorporated natural motifs, such as flowing floral patterns and delicate organic shapes, which became the signature elements of the brand.

Collaborations and Influences

Georg Jensen’s commitment to artistic excellence extended beyond his own talent. He fostered collaborations with talented designers and artists, both Danish and international, who shared his vision. Notable collaborations include those with Johan Rohde, Arno Malinowski, Henning Koppel, and Nanna Ditzel, among others. These collaborations brought fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the brand, while remaining true to the essence of Georg Jensen’s design aesthetic.

International Recognition

Georg Jensen’s work gained international recognition, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s.
