Your Guide to Vintage Sparkle

At Zelley Jewellers, we have a deep appreciation for the enduring charm of antique jewellery. In particular, old cut diamonds continue to captivate collectors and romantics alike with their rich history and uniquely warm glow. But what exactly is an old cut diamond – and why do they look so different from modern brilliant cuts?

In this guide, we’ll explore the key questions we’re often asked about old cut diamonds, and introduce five stunning examples from our pre-owned collection, including three exquisite new arrivals.

What is an Old Cut Diamond?

Old cut diamonds are antique diamonds, hand-cut between the 18th and early 20th centuries – long before the introduction of laser cutting and computer modelling. These diamonds were shaped with rudimentary tools, often by candlelight, which gives them their characteristic deep proportions, high crowns, small tables, and larger open culets. They were cut for soft, romantic sparkle rather than maximum brilliance.

There are several types of old cuts, including:

  • Old Mine Cut – Squarish or cushion-shaped with a high crown and deep pavilion.
  • Old European Cut – Rounder than the mine cut, with more symmetry but still a visible culet.
  • Rose Cut – Flat-bottomed with a domed, faceted top (more common in Georgian jewellery).
  • Transitional Cuts – The bridge between antique and modern brilliant cuts, dating from the 1920s–30s.

How Can You Tell the Difference Between an Old Cut and a Modern Brilliant Cut?

Modern brilliant cut diamonds are precision-engineered for fire and sparkle, with 57 or 58 facets arranged in a uniform pattern. Old cuts, by contrast, often show slight asymmetry and larger facets that reflect light differently – more like a candlelit glow than a glittering flash. The culet is also a giveaway: old cuts often have a visible open culet (a flat point at the base), whereas modern cuts typically come to a sharp point.

Are Old Cut Diamonds Less Brilliant?

Old cuts are less sparkly than modern brilliants in the technical sense, but that’s exactly what makes them special. They have a softer, more romantic lustre that many people find more appealing and unique. Each stone has its own character, shaped by the hand of a craftsman, not a machine.

Are Old Cut Diamonds More Valuable?

Old cut diamonds aren’t always more expensive per carat than modern diamonds, but their value lies in their scarcity, character, and craftsmanship. No two are exactly alike. They’re especially desirable when paired with antique settings or in rings that retain their original box and mount.

Collectors and vintage enthusiasts often place a premium on originality and authenticity – and old cut diamonds offer both in abundance.

What Should I Look For When Buying an Old Cut Diamond?

When buying an old cut diamond, we recommend considering:

  • Provenance – Is it part of a vintage or antique setting?
  • Character – Do you love the shape, glow, and uniqueness of the stone?
  • Condition – Are the settings secure? Are any diamonds chipped?
  • Certification – Old cuts are often uncertified but can be graded by experienced jewellers.
  • Mount design – Many antique rings have beautiful hand-carved mounts (the ‘head’ of the ring), which are part of their appeal.

At Zelley, every pre-owned ring is carefully inspected and restored where necessary, so you can buy with confidence.

How Are Old Cut Diamonds Graded?

Grading old cut diamonds can be tricky, as many were cut before standardised methods were introduced. Today, they’re generally graded using the same system as modern diamonds (colour, clarity, carat, cut), but with more tolerance for asymmetry and variation. The key is to see them in person, as their charm often lies beyond the numbers.

Caring for Old Cut Diamond Rings

Old cut diamonds are just as hard as modern ones (still 10 on the Mohs scale), but the settings can be more delicate. We recommend:

  • Regular checks of claws and mounts
  • Gentle cleaning (mild soap, warm water, soft brush)
  • Avoiding harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners
  • Insuring your antique jewellery for peace of mind
