Linked by Blood, Linked by Gold: Why We Got Permanent Bracelets
At Zelleys, we’ve spent our lives surrounded by jewellery that marks milestones, engagements, weddings, anniversaries. But recently, my brother and I wanted to mark something different. Not a romantic milestone or a celebration announced to a room full of guests, but something quieter and, in many ways, more fundamental. The bond of family.
We took a single, high-quality gold chain, split it in two, and had both halves welded permanently to our wrists, right here in our Bishop’s Stortford workshop. Two separate bracelets. One unbroken story.

Now, no matter where we are in the world or how busy life gets, I can touch my wrist and know my brother is wearing his, too. It’s a subtle, constant reminder that we’re always connected. It’s more than a bracelet, it’s a feeling of home you carry with you.
What is Permanent Jewellery?
Permanent jewellery is a custom-fit, clasp-less piece, most commonly a bracelet or anklet, that is micro-welded directly onto your wrist or ankle. There’s no fastening to fumble with, no clasp that weakens over time, no moment of realising it’s gone. Once it’s on, it’s on.
It’s lightweight, comfortable, and designed to be worn 24/7. It doesn’t snag, it doesn’t demand attention, it just sits against your skin as if it was always meant to be there.
Why Get “Linked”?
The aesthetic is beautiful and minimalist, but most people choose permanent jewellery for the emotion behind it.
The Family Bond Like my brother and me, many customers choose matching chains to mark a lifelong connection, parents and children, sisters, brothers, chosen family. Two people, one chain, one story worn on separate wrists.
The Anchor to a Place Some people want to mark a place rather than a person. The holiday destination you return to every year. The city where you met your partner. The church where you got married, the hospital where your child was born. Places hold versions of us we don’t want to forget, and a permanent bracelet is a way of keeping that close, subtle, but solid, every single day.
The Tribute A way to honour someone you’ve lost and keep their memory present in the small, everyday moments. There’s no wrong reason to get permanent jewellery, but for many people, this is the most meaningful one.
Practicality, Because Life Doesn’t Pause No clasp means no weak point and no lost bracelet. It keeps up with you in the gym, in the water, in the garden, in the office. Jewellery that finally keeps up with you.
The Zelley Process: How It’s Done
Everything happens right here in our on-site workshop. We’ve combined traditional craftsmanship with modern micro-welding technology to make the process quick, safe, and memorable.
- Choose Your Chain We carry a curated selection of solid 9ct gold, 14ct gold, and sterling silver chains, chosen for quality, durability, and quiet elegance.
- The Perfect Fit We measure the chain to your wrist or ankle so the fit feels like a second skin, not too tight, not too loose. Perfectly tailored.
- The Spark Our jeweller uses a precision micro-welder to join the links. You’ll see a tiny flash of light, the spark. It takes less than a second, is completely painless, and is one of those small moments that somehow feels bigger than it should.
- The Connection You walk out wearing a piece of jewellery with no beginning and no end. Take a moment to look at it, because this is the start of a story that’ll be with you for a long time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt?
Not at all. The micro-welding process takes a fraction of a second and you won’t feel a thing. We get this question a lot, and the answer is always the same, customers are usually surprised by just how quick and easy it is.
Can I take it off if I need to?
Yes, if you ever need it removed, just come back to us and we’ll take it off safely in the workshop. It’s worth going in knowing it’s designed to be permanent and meant to stay, but life happens and we’re always here if you need us. If you’d like a replacement afterwards, we can re-link you on the same visit.
Is it safe to wear in water, the gym, or through a scanner?
Yes, yes, and yes. Permanent jewellery is designed for real life. You can shower, swim, and exercise in it without any issues. It will pass through airport and security scanners without setting anything off, it’s a very small amount of metal.
What metals do you use? Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
We use solid gold and sterling silver, no plating, no fillers. Gold in particular is an excellent choice for sensitive skin as it’s hypoallergenic and won’t tarnish or irritate.
How long does the appointment take?
The welding itself takes seconds, but we’d set aside around 30 minutes for your visit so there’s no rush, time to choose your chain, get the fit right, and enjoy the moment.
Can we come as a group?
Absolutely, and honestly, groups are some of our favourite appointments. Friends, sisters, mothers and daughters, it turns into a really lovely experience. Just give us a heads up when you book so we can make sure we have enough time for everyone.
Do you offer gift vouchers?
We do. Our Linked by Zelley Experience gift vouchers are a beautiful gift for someone you want to share the moment with, whether that’s a birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, or just because.
What happens if the bracelet breaks or gets damaged?
Bring it back to us and we’ll re-weld it for you. It’s a simple fix and we’re always happy to help.
